If you're looking for a game that's heavy on combat and light on story, then Serious Sam 3 is perfect for you. In this third installment of the popular series, players take control of titular protagonist Sam "Serious" Stone as he battles through four apocalyptic worlds to save Earth from an invasion by Mental's invading aliens. Armed with a variety of weapons including classic over-the-top shooter favorites like the double trigger machine gun, frag grenade, and cannonball shooter, players will be asked to destroy seemingly endless hordes of enemies – from committed suicide bombers and ferocious werewolves – to rocket wielding grannies and lumbering giants. Players are also able to take on the role of several characters, including Sam's father, Sarge, his trusted dog companion, Bill, and even Commander 'Big Daddy' himself. Just like their human counterpart, the non-human characters have special traits. For example, Sam is able to dual wield weapons while Sarge gets an extra powerful melee attack. Sam's health is displayed by a number of hearts at the top left corner of the screen. It will automatically regenerate when not under attack so no need to worry about finding health points in this game. However there are many ways to increase your health supply. You can find red cans of armor scattered around the levels which will refill your health. You can also collect medals which also will refill health. If you manage to collect enough medals you'll get an extra life. As with the previous game, players cannot die or be killed while playing Serious Sam 3: BFE. However, should Sam sustain too much damage, he will lose some of his hearts and be incapacitated temporarily until he restarts from the last checkpoint. Players are free to restart at any checkpoint they've reached but there are no means of saving mid-game so dying would mean having to replay through all the levels again if this happens. Should the player lose all their lives, then they will be sent back to the last checkpoint. They can also quit the game at any time without losing their progress. However, if they do restart from a checkpoint, they will have to take on all enemies again which can make the process quite long and tedious. Should players find themselves in an incredibly difficult situation or want to change weapons or ammo types, there are several ammo dispensers located throughout each level. These dispensers allow players to instantly replenish ammo of any type so they can continue on with their current mission with ease. The most important points about Serious Sam 3: BFE are its graphics and sound quality since these aspects greatly impact gameplay quality and enjoyment overall. The game looks gorgeous. The developers have upgraded the visuals in this installment, adding tons of new features and high-quality effects. The texture quality is vastly improved, the cel-shaded graphics are much smoother and more detailed, and the particle effects are smooth. The frame rate also runs fairly smoothly throughout the game, with only a few noticeable drops when there are multiple enemies on screen at once. Serious Sam 3: BFE has an excellent sound track which includes both orchestral scores and sound effects all created by award winning composer Clark Tracey. Other than being highly entertaining while playing through the game, each song adds an extra enjoyment factor because these tracks are perfectly timed to fit perfectly with the action on screen.
