The development of a country can be seen through the main novels that change the social and cultural lives. The marathi literature has been developed to convey political, social, and religious concepts in Marathi language by essentializing such concepts. This paper traces the emergence of Marathi literature from its birth in 10th century AD to present day times. The process of production and publication is followed over time with reference to different societies which helped shape imagination of its audiences. Different genres like, epic poetry, didactic poetry or prose fiction were created and changed into new forms with changing conditions over centuries. The heroes and heroines of this literature were the products of a society and later became vehicles for social reform. The writers used these figures as a means to create awareness among readers, especially those from hidden or disadvantaged communities, about values that should guide their lives. The notion that the society has gotten better over time is utilized for guilt relief as well as to encourage people to do better, smarter things. Such belief in long run evolution of society is also seen in folktales or epics. Marathi literature consists of thousands of books published over the ages with many on topics varying from mithuna (love) to madhavi (victory). A few on Mahabharata are still being published today. The characters from Mahabharata as well as historical figures from Shivaji era have been the main source of inspiration for writers whose works have been highlighted as significant by scholars. The heroes and heroines of these books have been evolved from folktales and mythological stories. Vyankatesh Madgulkar, a guru to a generation of Marathi writers, has said that the "heroes take birth out of a need for a change in society." Their iconic status can be seen in public celebrations on their birthdays. The study shows how the society has found its heroes even in ordinary men and women who stood up against injustice. The list of historical figures who have influenced the literature is very long. The most famous novels are "Kaala Pati" (1813) by Mahanor Malusre, "Devata" (1817) by Tukaram Pandurang Kadam, "Smaran Paschim" (1840-42) by Gopal Narayan Apte, and the epic "Virat Puran" of Vaman Shivram Apte. Some authors like Vyankatesh Madgulkar, Shahu Maharaj and Ganesh Vasudeo Deshpande helped to build a new generation of writers in Marathi. The date of publishing of these books is varied between 1660s to 1900s. These books were published by Moropant Pingle, Pranjivan Manohar, Dhanaji Prabhakar, Patwardhan and Laxman Narayan Chitale.
